Dialup: Distance Dialin Service: iPass: FAQ

Article ID: 275

How does iPass work?

iPass provides a service between ISPs to enable their users to be authenticated when dialing into each others' services. This service is made possible through the use of intelligent routing and software. All you must do is have an account with FRII and have a current copy of the iPass software on your computer. (The software download can be found below or on the FRII CD). When you travel, you dial into the local number provided in the iPass dialer and you log in with your FRII user ID and password. There is one difference in the login, you must include @frii.com in the box provided after your user ID. In essence, you are still logging into the Internet via FRII, even though you are connected through a different Internet Service Provider. You can continue to use your regular web browser, e-mail program or news group software.

What are the benefits?

The following are the primary benefits of using the iPass global roaming service:

  • Roaming charges are significantly less than long distance charges.
  • Log into a local number all over the world while maintaining one account.
  • Access all Internet services such as e-mail, WWW, etc.
  • Use existing (and familiar) web browser/e-mail.

What are the charges for the use of the service?

Charges will vary from location to location. Your software will automatically quote you an hourly price for the location you are calling from to be added to your FRII bill. You will be charged a minimum of one hour per month for use of this service. After the minimum 1 hour charge your charges will be pro-rated based on actual usage. For example if you use the service for 1 hour and 5 minutes you will be charged for 1 hour and 5 minutes. If you use the service for 45 minutes you will be charged for 1 hour to meet the minimum 1 hour charge requirement.

You can connect multiple times to the service. If you connect 4 times for 15 minutes you will be charged one hour. If you connect 3 times for 10 minutes you will be charge for one hour. If you connect 5 times for a total of 1 hour and 23 minutes, you will be charged for 1 hour and 23 minutes.
NOTE: The above iPass charges are only the FRII charges, they do not include hotel charges or local phone charges incurred in foreign countries. Please speak with the hotel staff or your host to determine what hotel or local call charges may apply.

You will not be charged for having the iPass Connect software installed on your computer so feel free to download it. You will be charged if you use the software to connect.

How will I be billed when I use the service?

The charges for the iPass global Internet roaming service will be on a monthly basis and will form part of your monthly invoice statement from FRII.

What are the available roaming numbers?

The roaming coverage extends to more than 150 countries and more than 1000 locations. You can now enjoy local call access to the Internet in virtually every major city throughout the world. The complete list is available from iPass (click the link to Access Point Finder). iPass will automatically download the most recent phone book of participating ISPs when you log on using the iPass software. NOTE: It is strongly recommended if you are traveling overseas that you test the software before you go. Since the iPass software "knows" when the phone book needs to be updated, you will be able to download the updated phone book before your trip and additionally, if you have any problems, you will be able to contact FRII Tech Support for assistance.

Is there any special software or configuration I need to have if I want to use the roaming service?

You only need to download the iPass software from our site, or install it from the FRII CD, to use the service. There are no special configurations for dialup users except that your iPass login will be your FRII login name followed by @frii.com (user@frii.com).

Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000/XP Users:

You can download the Windows version here.

Macintosh Users:

iPass for OSX is available here.

How do I use iPass once it is installed?

Open the iPass software by clicking on the iPassConnect icon on your desktop (for PC's this should also be available from Start> All Programs> iPass> iPassConnect). Make sure you're on the tab labeled "modem." Then specify your country, city and area code in the appropriate fields. The available numbers will display in the "phone book" field along with the price per hour and maximum speed (in bytes per second). If your hotel requires you to dial a specific number in order to get an outside line you can input this by clicking on "dial properties" and then adding a value to: "to access an outside line dial" and hitting "Ok." Once all of this is done simply select a number from the phone book list and hit "Connect." Keep in mind you will need to use your full FRII dialup username (including the @frii.com) and the associated password.

Who do I call for technical assistance when I encounter a problem while roaming?

If you encounter any problems while using the roaming numbers, please call our technical support team at (800) 935-6527. If you are overseas you must dial our direct office number (970) 212-0700, opt.1 for support. Please test the iPass software before traveling overseas to avoid an international call to FRII.
