Quota: Calculator for Converting between bits, bytes, megs, etc.

Article ID: 236

FRII uses many different units to measure disk usage, bandwidth quotas, and transfer rates. If converting between kilobits, megabytes, and terabits is making your head hurt, try our handy conversion calculator.

To use the calculator simply enter the number you would like to convert in the appropriate field. Click the calculate button and the calculator will fill in the rest of the fields with equivalent values. (The calculator will round to 4 significant digits, so values will be approximate.)

Bit

Short for binary digit, the smallest unit of information on a machine. A single bit can hold only one of two values: 0 or 1. There are eight bits in a byte.

Byte

Abbreviation for binary term, a unit of storage capable of holding a single character. On almost all modern computers, a byte is equal to 8 bits. Large amounts of memory are indicated in terms of kilobytes (1,024 bytes), megabytes (1,048,576 bytes), and gigabytes (1,073,741,824 bytes).

Kbps stands for kilobits per second whereas the quota system for total bandwidth usage is measured in Gigabytes per month.

The charts below are estimates. All numbers are rounded to 3 decimal places and 30 is used as the number of days in a month. FRII's system measures much more precisely than the charts below, so there will be some discrepancies.
