A Brief Intro to Ethernet and Custom Wireless Ethernet

You’ve probably heard the term “Ethernet cable.” Or at least you have if you were involved with computers before the wireless revolution! But what exactly is Ethernet? And what is custom wireless Ethernet? Read on for a quick intro.

What is Ethernet?

Technically speaking, Ethernet is a collection of networking technologies that allow computers to communicate with one another in local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN). Ethernet first came into general use in 1980. Soon after, it was standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It has been enhanced to support faster communication speeds pretty continually ever since. The original Ethernet data transfer rate was 2.94 megabits per second (Mbps). Today, a speed of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) is possible. Ethernet ultimately replaced older technologies that you may have heard of like token ring and token bus.

How Does Ethernet Work?

Ethernet originally used coaxial cable to communicate. However, newer variations use what is called twisted pair and fiber optic links, along with hubs or switches. FRII provides Ethernet that utilizes either copper wire or fiber optic cable along with our custom wireless Ethernet.

With Ethernet, computers communicating with one another divide data into chunks called “frames.” Each frame contains information like the source and destination addresses, along with error-checking information.
